Safeway Inc. is one of the largest food retailers in North America, operating approximately 1,300 stores across 21 states (subsequent to the sale of Canada Safeway Limited). It also owns 17 distribution centres; 20 food manufacturing plants; 49% of Mexican food retailer Casa Ley, with 195 stores in western Mexico; and 100% of Internet retailer GroceryWorks.com. In addition, Safeway owns a significant majority interest in Blackhawk Network Holdings, which provides third-party gift cards, prepaid cards, telecom cards and sports and entertainment cards. Safeway is based in Pleasanton, California, and has approximately 140,000 employees, about 80% of whom are unionized.
